INSTRUCTION

Module Information Booklet

Week 5 - 6
From this week onwards we won't be having class except for consultations, so during this week we independently did our own data collection. We decided to do interviews, surveys, and also digital museums. We divided the works, Sajiya finds the interviewees, I and Marsya would be doing the surveys while Caitlyn, Cynthia, and Alyssa would be doing the digital museums.

Sajiya contacted 3 people that agreed to be interviewed:
  1. Ms. Gong Pan Pan - Hanfu Girl
  2. Ms. Anisha
  3. Mr. Shanawaz
We used the same questions for all the interviewees, although at some point we changed the questions a bit to fit their backgrounds.

Since I and Marsya are in charge of the surveys, we came up with a lot of questions and then asked the other members to look at the questions and revise them if there is something that needs to be corrected.

We all shared the survey on Instagram story so that people could answer the surveys and the survey continued for around 2 - 3 days before we stopped collecting the data.

The google survey was conducted also to decide on our final outcome, and as a result, a lot of people liked the idea of mask and tote bags. The designs people chose were mostly what people think China is related to (Dragons, Phoenix, etc.) and it could be said to be a kind of stereotype. We also decided to go with making posters to promote the symbolism of hanfu in our final outcome.

First Interview - Ms. Gong Pan Pan (Hangu Girl)

With the questions made before, we divide them so that all of us have a chance to talk with the interviewee. This first interview went pretty well as there is no problem along. Ms. Gong Pan Pan gave us a lot of information about hanfu that we didn't know about and she also introduced us to a new term called the Four Gentlemen (The Chrysanthemum, Bamboo, Orchid, and Plum Blossom).

Second Interview - Ms. Anisha Chanda (Designer of Housofpsy)

Since we thought of making tote bags for our final outcome, we decided that we need to learn more about bags so Sajiya contacted Ms. Anisha and she agreed to be interviewed. It is a very relaxing interview and Ms. Anisha gave us a lot of information about bags too.

Last Interview - Mr. Shanawaz Hussain (Owner of Valens Virgo)

Lastly, we interviewed Mr. Shanawaz about masks and he explained to us what material is right to make a mask and he even explained to us how business works.

We need to transcribe the interviews so I and Sajiya transcribed them. I mostly used Otter.ai to help me transcribe, it is very helpful.

After finishing everything we compiled the data into the presentation slide and are ready to record for submission.

FEEDBACK

Week 5
  • Change some of the interview questions.
  • Insert photos from digital museums, google maps, or other visual research materials in order to support the data.
  • To form a short rationale for the final outcome.
  • Insert a screenshot of the interview session, along with a transcribe of the interview
Week 6
  • According to the ROs and RQs, validate some questions and discover something different or new information.
  • Use rationale as a guide for data collection
  • What kind of politics are we incorporating into our design? Negative connotation or Tradition?
  • Use Hanfu to spread an agenda to the community.
  • Focus on the positive side/symbolism of the Hanfu, rather than utilizing the negative propaganda.
  • Use the Hanfu to spread a positive message and revive the Hanfu culture to its form of beauty.
  • Use colors and patterns, need not have to replicate the clothing.

REFLECTION

Experience
We were only given 1 week to collect data and it was very hectic since we need to rush. At first, I thought transcribing the interview won't take that long because I used otter.ai, but seems that I still need to listen to the whole conversation to correct some words and sentences. There are some that are even not audible so I need to repeat the audio over and over again. However, it all went well because everyone did a great job on their part.

Observations
I think people are more preoccupied with what they have seen and heard, just like how people tend to associate the dragons and phoenix with Chinese culture, of course, it is not wrong to think like that but since the interview about Hanfu, it gave me an eye-opener that there are a lot of things that I still don't know.

Findings
It is important to collect data before executing the final outcome. I realized that all the answers given by people in the surveys bring a new idea to our group, at first we thought of using dragons and flowers in the design. But, because of what Ms. Gong said and how to answers to the surveys turned out, we decided to use the Four Gentlemen, and that works as well.
