What is Research?

Research is the systematic and creative investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions, it increases the stock of knowledge and is the pursuit of knowledge.

Why Should I Research?

By doing research it can help us:
  1. Expand understanding
  2. Defines academic, career, and personal interest
  3. Gain academic experience
  4. Develop critical thinking, leadership, time management, and communication skills
  5. Explore research techniques
How Should I Start?

There are some details we need to pay attention to before going further into research:
  1. Identify the field of interest (topic)
  2. Delve into further research and establish research problem (area of interest)
  3. Form problem statement
  4. Formulate research questions
  5. Identify research objectives

figure 1.2 Research Problem

Since we need to confirm our research problem and field of interest by week 2, we were provided with a PDF for how to make a research problem.

Week 2

Problem Statement

A problem statement is a concise description of an issue to be addressed or a condition to be improved upon, it identifies the gap between the current state and desired state. The function of a problem statement is to pave way for the reader to understand the research problem.

Research Question

What is a research question?
  1. The research question is an answerable inquiry into a specific concern or issue
  2. The first active step
  3. The ground of the foundation of the research.
To make good research questions, there are some steps that need to be followed:
  1. Specify the specific concern or issue
  2. Decide on what needs to be known for the specific concern
  3. Turn the specific concern into an issue
  4. Ensure the question is answerable
  5. Make sure the question is not too narrow or too broad.
Research Objective
  1. Describes what is expected to achieve
  2. It May be linked to a hypothesis or used as a statement purpose
  3. Guide to the activities of research.
Hypothesis

A hypothesis is a tentative statement about the relationship between two or more variables. It is a specific, testable prediction about what is expected to happen in a study. However, if it is a study of exploratory nature, the hypothesis should always explain what is expected to happen during the course of the experiment or research.

Variables

It is something that can be changed or varied, such as a characteristic or value. Variables are generally used in psychology experiments to determine if changes to one thing result in changes to another.

Research Question

An answerable inquiry into a specific concern or issue. It is the initial step in a research project, derived from the problem statement or research objectives. Research question influences the strategy that is employed in order to either provide answers to the questions or verify/falsify hypotheses.

Research Objective

A research objective is what a researcher expects to accomplish by the end of a research project which is derived from a problem statement or research questions. A good research objective is:
  1. S -> Specific
  2. M -> Measureable
  3. A -> Attainable
  4. R -> Realistic
  5. T -> Time Bound
Inductive Approach

Inductive approach is used when there is little to no existing literature on a topic, there are 3 stages:
  1. Observation -> It is difficult to obtain information through the website of Etsy due to poor design.
  2. Observe a pattern -> Conduct a systematic study on another 10 online shops that pose the same problem.
  3. Develop a theory -> Poor web design of online shops causes difficulty for customers to obtain information.
Deductive Approach

Deductive research is used when there is already a theory available, there are 4stages to this:
  1. Start with an existing theory -> Poor web design of online shops causes difficulty for customers to obtain information.
  2. Formulate a hypothesis based on that theory -> If online shops websites are designed well, all customers will be able to obtain information easily.
  3. Collect data to test that theory -> Conduct a survey to collect data.
  4. Analyse the results - does the data reject or support the hypothesis? -> 150 out of 200 survey participants agreed that poor web design hinders them from obtaining information

Workshop for this week.

INSTRUCTIONS

Module Information Booklet

Week 1 (29/03/21 - 04/04/21)

We had our first class today and we were briefed on the MIB, then we had to decide on our specialization. There will be a meeting later on, but I didn't join because I have decided on my specialization back in semester 1.

The task for this week is to search 5 or more articles and confirm our field of interest to make a rationale, we were also told to make a drive folder and watch the lectures.

figure 1.9 Initial Idea

I put all my initial ideas into a doc before deciding on which topic I should go with, in the end I went with the last choice which is regarding attire in character design. Then, I started on my rationale

Week 2 (05/04/21 - 11/04/21)

Since my timetable was divided into 2 days, every Monday would be QnA questions for me. We had to provide our blog link, renamed our drive folder (there was a mistake), and be sure to establish the problem statement, research questions, and research objectives by next week. I also showed Dr. Hayati my proposal draft 2.

Week 3 (12/04/21 - 18/04/21)

This week, I had to revise my proposal draft and started making the slides for the final submission.

Week 4 (19/04/21 - 25/04/21)

This week we had to complete the workshop and finalize our proposal and slides because it needs to be submitted by this Sunday.

For the final submission, we were given another chance to fix our proposal, below is my final proposal submission:

FEEDBACKS

Week 1
  • Since you have done research from the semester before, you can do more further research on it.
Week 2
  • Identify specific animation
  • Compare the Chinese animation to American animation to make a contrast
  • The hypothesis seems more like a research problem so you need to change the wording
  • If the article is relevant put it in the critical review folder
  • Provide blog link
Week 3
  • Describe the item related to your action (progression sheet)
  • Rephrase your research problem to be more specific
  • Describe that you’re focusing on a Chinese culture character before giving the example of animations
  • Be more specific about the patterns and colors, is it textile or others (Research Question 2)
  • Narrow down to a certain  dynasty (Research Objective 1)
  • Be more specific and redefine/rephrase the sentence (Research Objective 2)
  • Rephrase the sentence, it seems like you have already make a prototype (Research Objective 3), maybe you can use identify since you’re still researching
  • What part of attire are you referring to, is it head to toe or something else
  • Further extend your consequences
  • Put in reference base on APA (don’t provide link)
Week 4
  • Rationale needs to be fixed because your rationale is more like a statement, not assumptions
  • Put in the reason why you’re doing this research in your rationale
  • Problem statements need to have direct quotations in the sentences you used
  • There seem to be 2 variables in one question. Like your RQ 1( history, and Tang dynasty)

REFLECTION

Week 1
From the very beginning, I knew that this class would be very difficult for me because I'm not a really organized person and I don't really like to read that much, especially if I need to read lots of words on screen since my eyes would often hurt. However, I do appreciate this class very much because with this I get to research what I'm interested in. This week was only introductions but seems like there were problems regarding our timetable and I was very confused.

I did a lot of brainstorming of what my topic should be and honestly it was very difficult for me because the topic I'm interested in doesn't have a lot of information.

Week 2
I had my rationale checked and I was actually pretty satisfied with the feedbacks Dr. Hayati gave about my rationale. The rationale was not really that hard to make but the next task which is making the problem statement and others were really hard for me because as I mentioned in the week 1 reflection, there is hardly any information about the topic I'm doing.

Week 3
It was a tough week for me because I have a lot to revise on, so I did a lot more research and revised it. I was very careless too because I forgot the links of the articles I used in my problem statement so I need to search the keywords one by one again.

Week 4
The workshop really helps me with citing in APA style, I also found lots of information in the library that I can use in the future for the research. When making the slides for submission, I also had a lot of fun actually, it was because I enjoy searching for Hanfu clothing, it is very gorgeous and the images I need are also related to character design, so I really like this process.
