Project 1 Self- Portrait
LECTURE
Self-Portrait
Self
Basic personality or nature especially considered in terms of what we really like as a person or a person's essential being that distinguishes them from others. Self is into 5:
- How others see me
- How I see myself
- My experiences
- My interests
- My thoughts
Self-Portrait
A visual depiction of self in a form of a drawing/painting/sculpture/design.
figure 1.1 Examples of Self-Portrait
For our first project, which is self-portrait, I did some reflection upon myself. What do I really like or hate? I thought a lot about it before sketching. I also found many inspirations from Pinterest.

Then based on my sketch, I redraw them in a program called Clip Paint Studio. Did the line art and colored it there.

To add more effects and stuff I decided to use Procreate, as I find it easier.

For this project we need to apply our design principle knowledge. Here, I try to play with contrast, unity, and harmony. The contrast can be seen in the cloud and shapes/lines where the cloud is made up of many circular shapes while the shapes are square, different from circles. There are also harmony and unity used in the yellow background and the color of the clouds, they are from the same family color. Also, I try to emphasize the 'me' in the portrait because I want people to see the movement of my hand "hush" to make people understand that I asked them to stay quiet. I also found out that my cloud could actually act as a symbol, from the colors of the cloud we can see that it is gloomy, while the scribbles there could act as the messy mind, when both of them combined it means pressure. Because when we have pressures, we will get gloomy and our mind will be in a mess.
RATIONALE
For this project I want to depict how I don’t like being judged and pressured. These days, people are a lot more commanding, everything I do were sometimes seen as bad to them, but it was actually something I like. Some of the people around me often judge me as strange because how I used to love anime or Japanese stuff, I actually still liked them but that made me sad and I tried to shut myself from that world. But, because of that I felt empty. I may not be a hardcore fan of it, but Japanese cartoons are what made me decided to draw, and because of the judgments around me, it made me stopped drawing and eventually my skills dropped. But now I am majoring in Design and I don’t want that ugly feeling I had. However, some things changed, now I get pressure whenever I draw, people were comparing my works with the others and I feel small. I don’t want that kind of feeling, so through this self-portrait I hope I could empower myself.
FEEDBACK
I was excused from the class when we had feedback given as I have something important to attend so I had my feedback on Sunday. When I sent my sketches to Miss, she said that I should just combine those 2 sketches together, enlarge the ball of scribbles and replace them as the clouds. So that would mean while I ask for others to shut up, I am who I am, and I am also above the pressures I face in life.
(Feedbacks from Teams)
Research: If you had started by describing who you are in Project 1’s blog, we can understand why you chose those particular Pinterest pictures. How do they relate to you or you them? Some color explorations would be good too. You need to include a short description for each of your sketches.
Final design: The final design shows calmness and a bit of sadness (the eyes), resonating the contents in the rationale. I agree with you that no one likes being judged but as part of society, we can never avoid that. However, it is our choice whether we want to be led by that and become miserable, or we live our lives meaningfully. I hope you feel better soon!
Blog entry: Include the Lecture and Instruction sections for Project 1: Self-Portrait. Make sure you include the source of each image with the caption.
REFLECTION
Experience
For this project, I find it hard to search for ideas as what we need to depict is ourselves. I spent a lot of time just to think of who I really am, what stuffs do I like, what do I want?
Observations
We were given a lot of time to do this project, as day goes by I try to think of how I should combine the 2 sketches together and what to use so I can obtain or use the design principle knowledge I have. Turns out that, everything actually has design principle knowledge whether we realized it or not.
Findings
This project really helped me to be more brave to face pressures. Because, when I was sketching my ideas I had a strong feeling of wanting to improve myself to be better. This project also made me open Clip Studio Paint again to color.
